Q. Does Modern Cellar provide custom design services?
A. Yes. Whether a wine cellar, commercial, retail or residential, we can custom design for you. For example, many of our larger pieces such as Wine Credenzas are often modified or retrofitted proportionately to accommodate a certain space or room size. Wine racks and shelves are often custom made for Commercial and Private Residences. Functional aspects of our pieces can also be tailored according to usability preferences. Q. What is included with my product?
A. Each includes a Certificate of Authentication uniquely identifying it as a Modern Cellar design, a Care and Cleaning reference sheet and if the piece requires wall mounting, Mounting Instructions and/or cleats are provided. Larger pieces such as credenzas or bar carts include a Method furniture cloth and touch up Walnut Oil packaged in a custom case made of recycled wine crate pine wood.
Q. Wine is heavy; can these shelves and racks hold the weight?
A. We test each product for load bearing strength and weight distribution prior to launching it to the general public. In fact, we use simple, tried-and-true wall mounts* that have been used for centuries. The more weight applied, the stronger the mounts will be. *Any/all products mounted to a wall must be secured to a solid surface or wood stud/beam.
Q. I am not an expert at hanging things on my wall. Can Modern Cellar help me?
A. Yes. While we cannot be there physically to hang it for you, we do provide detailed Mounting Instructions that include step-by-step instructions along with diagrams. The actual wall mounts are included, but not the hardware (screws/anchors, etc.). Most local hardware stores carry these items.
Q. How long will my product last?
A. Forever. It is a benefit that our products are made of solid materials and treated with all natural products. With proper care and cleaning, our products should compete nicely with the aging of your wine.
Q. Will humid conditions in wine cellars, wine rooms or simply a high humidity room destroy my product?
A. Our finishes are a hand-rubbed, sometimes twice-rubbed 100% Walnut Oil. This makes each piece to be extremely water resilient. In fact, you could eat off them, but that might seem strange to onlookers….

A. Here in the USA in our design studio - located just south of downtown San Diego, California.

Q. What types of wood does Modern Cellar offer?
A. The finest quality, hand selected hardwoods such as American Black Walnut, Bleached Walnut, Bamboo, Reclaimed redwood from Wente Vineyards and Butternut.
Q. Why are solid hardwoods used? Doesn't that contribute to deforestation?
A. Our woods are sourced from FSC certified companies. Bamboo has a rapid growth rate. Once cut, there are 2-3 times the amount grown concurrently as a replacement. Walnut is a post agricultural bi-product, therefore existing Walnut forests (rare if any) are not mowed down solely for production purposes.
Q. Are veneers and plywood incorporated into the designs?
A. Primarily our designs are made of hand selected, solid hardwoods. We take great pride in maximizing every inch that each board yields. Walnut-faced (veneered) plywood is incorporated into larger pieces where using solid wood does not make sense and would therefore be a disservice to the species - visually, aesthetically and practically. When applicable, we proudly incorporate Columbia PureBond, formaldehyde-free plywood.
Q. What kinds of adhesives are used?
A. All hardwood pieces use water-based adhesives and where plywood is implemented, a formaldehyde-free adhesive is used.

Q. How do I clean my product?
A. A handy Care and Cleaning reference sheet is provided with each purchase, but in lieu of our 'Green' offerings, we suggest dusting with a lint-free cloth and never to use chemical cleaners, furniture polishes or coarse towels and rags.
